Superheroes Academy Day 5

Superheroes Academy Day 5

A song about the ordinary!

Why are LICC, best known to us for resources that help us live for Christ on our 'frontline', promoting a new worship song? Hear Mark Greene explain and then introduce 'Immanuel’, a new song by Andy Flannagan, which looks at the ordinary moments of our lives – cooking, working, driving, walking, sleeping – and encourages us to see God in them, close beside us as we go about our daily tasks.  The song and accompanying music video are designed help us see God in our own lives, and prompt us to pray for our frontline.

CampsLite - Camp but not as you know it!

Image
This week many of us have ventured into the virtual world to participate in some of our normal summer activities. Holiday Club and the Keswick Convention came to us in our own homes. Obviously not everything could be duplicated at a distance but there were enough of the familiar elements to encourage us.   Each year in the long school holiday we normally wave a number of our young people off to various camps.  This year the journey will be shorter! Whilst they can't gather physically CampsLite enables parents to wave young people off  to their room or a corner of the lounge and let them connect with some of the normal aspects of camp. CampsLite will be running twice a day on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the weeks beginning August 3rd and 17th. There are multiple ways of interacting with CampsLite so why not explore the details and still 'do' camp!

My teacher says...

Image
I know it's the start of the school holiday and therefore it might be a strange time to flag a series of resources called 'My teacher says...' but here's hoping it might whet your appetite to explore things further during the lazier days of the summer weeks. Start off with a three minute read on 'How do you respond when teachers challenge your Christian faith?' and then bounce onto specifics in the areas of science, history or RE. And if your school days are long behind you - why not take a look so you can encourage your children or grandchildren, chat with the young people in the church or pray for them as they prepare to head back into school in the autumn.

Virtual Keswick Convention

Image
If yesterday's post was profiling summer activities for children and teens, here's one that includes the adults. Each summer many in the church head north to the Keswick Convention and benefit from the rich and diverse programme.  This year it is being brought to our own homes and can be accessed at our convenience, without using up any annual leave!    A packed online schedule based on the usual Convention programme for adults, youth and children, there’s something for everyone! The theme is hope – chosen because at this time of great uncertainty, in the midst of a global pandemic, there is hope in Jesus Christ. Check out outline programme below and explore the site to see what’s happening.  Don’t forget to put dates and times in your diary! Daily Programme 09:00 Prayer (Tuesday – Friday) 10:00 Bible readings by Christopher Ash on ‘Hope in Jesus’ from the Psalms 11:00 Coffee break

Virtual Ventures Coming soon to a device near you... CPAS normally run over 70 Venture holidays each summer for different age-groups. This summer, many of our Ventures will be running online events called Virtual Ventures - and if you're 8-18, we'd love to welcome you to one, or more of those! Each Virtual Venture will be a bit different but in every case you'll be able to connect with others, have some fun and explore Jesus further or for the first time. Some Virtual Ventures will take place on YouTube where you can watch everything on screen; others will be on Zoom where you can see each other and get involved in small group discussions; and we'll have some on Instagram and other platforms as well. If you're new to Ventures, this will be a great way to see what a Venture is like before hopefully packing your suitcases and joining us for a residential next year!  Virtual Ventures squeeze the fun, faith and friendship of Ventures throu

What would you say to your post lockdown self?

Image
Note to Self by Brian Draper   Originally published by LICC on June 19th, 2020r Connecting with Culture Issues & Trends ‘If theatre has survived, then go… and again look around you, at those hundreds of people sitting so close, sitting in the dark as a collective and listening to stories, and marvel at how mad and brilliant that is.’ Such evocative words from the playwright James Graham, composed recently as part of a letter that he (along with other cultural figures) sent to his ‘post-lockdown self’, sealed in an envelope to be opened next year. What a great idea! It’s to remind him – and us, if we choose to participate – what life was like in lockdown; what we’ve missed, what we’ve welcomed, and what we’ve learned about how to live, beyond it. Thinking about it, the last few weeks, for me, are filled with moments of awakening, like the seeds scattered in the parable of the sower. I remember the initial, visceral shock of seeing empty shelves. No

Graduating during lockdown (2)

Image
James Bennett Introduce yourself. What and where have you been studying for the past few years? What else made up student life for you? Hi, I’m James Bennett and have been studying Systems Engineering at Warwick University for the past 4 years. During these years I’ve been grateful to be a part of Myton Church so let me use this as a thank you to you all! Besides my studies, it has been great to be involved with the Christian Union and enjoying other things like attending Design Jams (a weekly engineering event to eat food and socialise whilst designing and making stuff), walking in the mountains with the Warwick Mountains club and spending time with friends. What was it like for your University to go into lockdown? How has it impacted your finals and graduation? Our term finished on 13th March and whilst I was definitely washing my hands more, we were fortunate in many senses that our term wasn’t disrupted very much. I was heading home to Herefordshire for the Ea

Graduating during lockdown (1)

Year after year you've watched other students take their finals and graduating. You began the academic year expecting to follow in their footsteps. Then lockdown began and you were no longer returning to University after the Easter vacation. What has been it been like to take your finals and graduate in 2020? Today and tomorrow two Warwick University finalists who have been part of Myton Church share their experience.  Elisabeth Massie tells us her story.

On furlough with Andy Clarke

Image
Andy Clarke shares what it has been like to be on furlough for the past 3months. Introduce yourself Hi there. I’m Andy, I live in Warwick and have been going to Myton church for 18 years. Sorry - that sounds terribly cliché doesn’t it? The sort of thing you’d say in an awkward meeting where you have to introduce yourself to a small group of strangers. Let’s try again. I’m Andy, happily married to Naomi and proud Dad to Josiah (14) and Malachi (12). Naomi and I moved to Warwick to be closer to our jobs 18 years ago. Three different people recommended Myton (two of which didn’t go themselves), we went on our first Sunday here and never tried anywhere else. I now work in Leamington at Bravissimo (cue polite surprise – when I tell people where I work I get ‘oh really?’ or a wry smile) in the IT Project Management Team. I’m a Business Analyst which means I help people to define what they want from a project and how we will know it works. Prior to this I had mostly wo

'A pandemic, the Church and Mission'

What happens when, during a pandemic, we come to Scripture not seeking a text for our personal comfort but with the church and mission on our radar. Hear Chris Wright briefly share some insights.

Students song!

Image
Universities across the world have been forced to close their doors. Students have been scattered far and wide, with the future of their education holding many uncertainties. This virtual choir is a collaboration of Christian Union students from many different backgrounds, each firmly united around their passion for sharing the good news of Jesus with their peers. Each student taking part has put their hope in Jesus and declares the basis of their confidence in this hymn. 550 voices. 35 countries. 7 languages!

At home with...the Wiltshires

Image
Alex, Dan & James Wiltshire 1. Introduce yourselves Hi, we’re Dan and Alex Wiltshire. We live in North Leamington with our 14 month old son James. We’re expecting another baby at the beginning of October. We usually attend the Westbury congregation. 2. What impact has the current lockdown had on you both? It was a bit of a shock to start with to realise that being pregnant put Alex in a vulnerable category. March was always going to be a time of change for us as Alex started working again after maternity leave and we swapped roles with Dan now looking after James more. Back in January Alex resigned from a permanent contract with a retailer to work on her consultancy business from March. Once the implications of Coronavirus were known we wondered if we had done the right thing despite having prayed about the situation for six months previously to that. Plans for Dan to get a part time job and Alex to take on extra clients for her business had to be p
